Ice storm strikes again!

So apparently we're getting another ice storm. It's 11am right now and they are already dismissing school early. Apparently in other parts of KY they already have about an inch of ice on the road. What makes ice storms so dangerous is how fast they come on. In just a matter of minutes, a road will be fine and then all of a sudden it freezes. Our roads in Kentucky are not designed to handle this kind of situation (we are not blessed with big open roads like the west). I'm hoping it won't hit Louisville very bad. About 5 years ago there was an Ice storm that hit Lexington, KY. We were living in that area at the time. We were going over to a friend's house to babysit for just a couple of hours. It was raining outside, but nothing bad. We arrived just fine and our friends went out on their date. About an hour later they came back and told us we wouldn't be able to leave tonight. The roads froze over so fast that they were actually unable to get up the hill to their house. They had to park farther down and hike up. Our car was covered in almost an inch thick of ice. We were stuck (Kelly was about 18 mo. at this time). So we thought we would be there for just the night. Oh no -- we were there for 3 days! It was actually a good thing that we were stuck at their house because our apartment lost power and at the time we had NO emergency preparedness stuff. Our friends were lifesavers! I felt really bad for them though because we were pretty much zombies the whole time we were there. Kelly for some reason was really scared at night and wouldn't sleep. I literally wasn't getting any sleep while we were at their house. I remember one time where my friend had made us a great breakfast and then was starting to load the dishwasher. I remember thinking to myself "Get up and help her load the dishwasher", but I physically could not move I was so tired. lol... I'm so surprised they remained our friends after that!!!!

But yeah, this time I'm prepared. I have canned fuel just in case the power goes out so I can heat up basic foods (ramen, canned soups, hot chocolate, etc....) I also have tons of candles, matches, flashlights, body warmers, water, etc etc etc....... if the power goes out this time, we'll be better prepared. It won't be fun, but we'll survive!!!! Wish us luck and hopefully it won't be bad at all!!!!

ya, we were iced inside today, too....isn't it fun to have no school in the middle of the week? YIPEEEEE...of course, it's not so fun to scrape ice in the COLD wintery bliss that is so chilling I think I've lost my mind living in Mizzour-ah

Sounds like exciting times over there. Good thing you are prepared. I think this story illustrates the point I always like to look for places with a fireplace. We have lost power one to many times at the G* house, and the fireplace is a life saver.

Oh, I sure hope you don't lose power. Ice storms seem so scary. My dad was in Tulsa, OK this morning and flew out just as the storm was starting there.

ICE STORMS VS -30!! What is better? I hope you guys are doing okay. Sounds like you are prepared. There is a reason we are told time and time again to be prepared. You never know what is going to hit you. Ben was transfered with his job here. Besides the really cold weather I love it. I don't think anyone ever dreams of living in ND but it is a well kept secret. The natives say that the cold keeps the riff-raff out.

LOL, I guess it's because I live out here now but I laugh every time I hear the city has "shut down" because of snow and ice. LOL I'm glad that you're prepared and just in case we have that snow of about 10 years ago....you're ready for a week of being trapped in. LOL

KY needs to get somebody else to manage our roadway system. It's pretty lousy. And don't every try to drive down Poplar Level road when they let all the schools out at once. It's bumper to bumper.
By the way...what is canned fuel? Do you use it to heat up your food? Know where I can score some? It sounds important for that emergency prep stuff.
